Clearance 8 — The Deep Zone
| Location | The deep zone — most unstable part of the island |
| Challenge type | Hardest combat in the pre-Blackout game |
| Story choice | ⭐ Beat 4 — fourth tracked choice |
| Tone | Something is very wrong. The last quiet moment before everything changes. |
What Happens
The deep zone is where the Glitch Effect is constant. Reality is visibly unstable here — tiles corrupt at the edges, audio stutters, the sky looks wrong. Wild Pokémon behaviour is erratic. The player must fight their way through the most difficult encounters in the game so far.
And then: Porygon-3.
Not a disorienting flash this time. A real encounter. Porygon-3 is present, aware, and unstable. The player faces it — and it looks back at them. The fight is hard. It ends. There is a moment of stillness.
Then Helix Corp is minutes away.
⭐ Story Choice — Beat 4
Porygon-3 is right in front of you. Helix Corp is minutes away.
| Option | What Happens | Tracks | |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Try to contain or capture it | Partial success — Porygon-3 retreats but it’s been held. Helix Corp arrives and finds the player has done most of their job. They are too pleased about this. | +1 Containment |
| B | Back off. Let it go. | The player steps back. Porygon-3 looks at them — actually looks at them — and disappears deeper into the zone. Then the Blackout hits. | +1 Evolution |
The Blackout
Immediately after the choice — regardless of which path — every screen on the island goes dark simultaneously. The Clearance system collapses. Communications fail. PokéCenters go offline.
A Helix Corp officer had been about to issue Clearance 8. He looks at his dead terminal. He looks at the player. Then he walks away.
Helix Corp drops the mask.
Key Moments
- The deep zone itself — the most visually distinct area in the game; reality is wrong here
- Porygon-3 encounter — first time it feels like a being, not a threat; it recognises the player
- Path A: Helix Corp’s pleasure at containment is deeply wrong in retrospect
- Path B: Porygon-3’s final look at the player before disappearing is the emotional hinge of the whole game
- The Blackout — the clearance system the player spent the whole game working through becomes meaningless in an instant
What the Player Learns
- Porygon-3 is aware. It can make choices.
- Helix Corp’s entire presence on the island was preparation for this moment
- The island’s stability was always a facade
Converging Path
Both A and B lead into the post-Blackout section. Path A players: Helix Corp knows you can contain it; they may try to use you. Path B players: Porygon-3 knows you let it go; this pays off at the final decision. All players proceed to Beat 5 — Giovanni’s Offer.
